Victims of the Waldo Canyon fire have an opportunity today to receive free sandbags to help protect their homes and property from flash flooding.
The give-a-way is taking place at the Verizon Wireless building (2424 Garden of the Gods Road).
It started at 8 a.m. and will go until 2 p.m.
Volunteers are there to fill sandbags and help residents load them in their vehicles.
To pick up sandbags, enter the Verizon Wireless parking lot off of 30th Street and Garden of the Gods Blvd.
Sand from the Olympic-sized volleyball pit for the Olympic Downtown Celebration is being used to fill the sandbags. The event took place on July 26, and now the 190 tons of sand is being used to help flood victims protect their homes.
