Highway 24 is reopened this morning after crews worked through the night to clear the road after a mudslide.

The heavy rain and flooding caused the mudslide on Highway 24 at mile marker 292 near Cascade. Both directions of the road were closed to traffic at Cave of the Winds.

A white pickup truck was caught in the mudslide. Landon Parker says he and his son escaped the mudslide without injury. They climbed out through the back because they couldn't open the doors.

Parker believes his truck was ruined, and his trailer was completely buried under the muck.

The National Weather Service called the storm a “very dangerous life threatening situation,” that could cause flash flooding in parts of Colorado Springs, Cascade, Chipita Park and Green Mountain Falls.

The danger of flash flooding is enhanced by the landscape changes caused by the Waldo Canyon Fire. Water that is normally absorbed by soils and vegetation runs off a burned area almost instantly. This causes creeks and drainage areas to flow much faster than normal and may also cause the soils to become unstable. That could cause landslides or falling rock.
