911 operators in Colorado Springs answered over 600 calls in two hours during Wednesday night’s incredible storm. The Fire Department reports they rescued 40 people and 1 dog.
According to 11 News Meteorologists, precipitation totaled as high as 4 inches in some areas of Colorado Springs. During a press conference Thursday, Mayor Steve Bach described it as a “100 year event.”
Many of those rescued were on top of cars that became stranded in the flood water. Four police vehicles were among those damaged and several officers were sent home for fear of hypothermia after wading through water to help rescue motorists.
There were no reports of fatalities or serious injuries.
City street and utility employees were also busy Wednesday. They responded to approximately 100 calls for downed trees and wind damage.
The Mayor’s press conference also touched on stormwater issues. The area around the Citadel Mall was highlighted as a region facing challenges with undersized drainage that can quickly become clogged.
