Deadly Tornado Hits Northern Colorado
At least three tornadoes have plowed through a swath of northern Colorado, killing at least one person and damaging homes, buildings and agricultural equipment in several towns.
One fatality has been confirmed by the Weld County Sheriff's Office. The victim was reportedly killed at a campground, Missile Site Park, northwest of Greeley.
Reports Friday also say about 100 people have been injured and at least 13 hospitalized.
Sections of Windsor are now under a mandatory evacuation order due to gas leaks and downed power lines. Law enforcement will notify citizens in areas affected.
All roads east of 7th st and south of main st (Hwy 392) closed in Windsor.
The storm tracked northwestward through or near the towns of Gilcrest, Platteville, Milliken, Greeley and Windsor. Windsor appears to be the hardest hit.
A city employee in Windsor says homes and buildings are damaged, trees are down and electricity has been knocked out.
Splintered wood, mangled metal and other debris cluttered roads, yards and agricultural fields. About 130 children at a daycare center in Windsor were reported safe after the storm passed through, but playground equipment outside the center was damaged.
A caretaker at a Weld County park outside Greeley, Pete Ambrose, says he lost his house, dog, cats and camper -- in short, everything.
The Weld County Sheriff's Office also says two tractor-trailer were completely overturned on Highway 85 and power has been knocked out in Greeley.
Interstate 25 at mile marker 274 south of Wellington was closed both ways due to damage and debris but has been reopened.
Specific reports of other injuries are unknown but the National Weather Service called the storm extremely dangerous and potentially life threatening.
A Red Cross relief center has been set up at the community center at 250 11th Street in Windsor.
The Weld Emergency Operations Center is open. Anyone needing information, assistance, or referrals, can call (970)304-6440.
