Winter Effects On Local Roads

The weather pattern Colorado Springs has had recently has required three snow plow call-outs in the first six days of March. According to officials, however, the outlook on this year's cold-related road repairs is sunny.

As March rolls in, residents wonder, will it snow, or won't it? If it does, how big of a mess will the roads be for drivers?

"I was impressed this morning, the roads were clean. I think they're doing a pretty good job," said Colorado Springs resident Judi Ingelido.

Most likely, it will snow. It already has this week.

"Most people are expecting spring to show up here any minute, but perfectly honest, March into April are heavy, wet snow months," said Streets Division Manager Bard Lower.

That means the city's staff of big-rig drivers aren't putting up the plow blades just yet. Brief snowfalls have put them to work twice already this week, working 12 hour shifts starting at 2 a.m.

"That snow goes away pretty quickly, but it keeps us hoppin'," Lower said.

The same crews that clear the streets have to repair them; finding and patching potholes. It's an around-the-year process that only gets more difficult the wetter and colder storms get.

"The little tiffs we've been getting will have some effect, but not nearly as much," said Lower.

According to Lower, that's good for the bottom line. Snow clearing is within the budget. Officials report the number of pothole repairs is manageable.

As far as watching the skies for weather, Lower thinks March is already living up to expectations.

"There's a 10 to 25 percent chance of snow [Thursday night]," he said. "We're ready."
