Alessandra rose is one of the lucky ones. Her internet service provider now offers fiber-optic broadband.

Verizon's Fios service is currently available to only 6 million customers in about 16 states. Consumer reports national research center found Fios subscribers were very satisfied with that service.

Fios got higher marks for speed than cable... Last year's winner. And customers were more satisfied with the cost of Fios than DSL”

But Consumer Reports' Rosalind Tordesillas says a big problem with internet broadband... People's choices are too limited.

More than one in five broadband users in our survey picked the type of service that they did because they had no other broadband option.”

When signing up for internet broadband service... You want to beware of promotional pricing that only lasts for a specified period of time.

Confirm what the regular pricing will be. You may have to call the company. And also ask about taxes and any additional fees.

You also want to make sure you know what your needs are. If you want speed and you don't have fiber optics in your area... Cable has the advantage. For price, DSLs the way to go.”

Consumer Reports says you may also be able to save by bundling other services such as phone and cable TV.
