There is a scam that is apparently circling the country – using the name of the military and a love of Bulldogs.
Our Call for Action office started hearing from victims last week. So far, I know of seven people who say they have been ripped off.
Rich in Minnesota, Jill and Holly, who are in Michigan, Chris is Pennsylvania, Shannon in Georgia, Katy in Arizona and Jessica in California. The wish they never responded to Internet ads featuring English Bulldogs puppies at a great price.
They are one of the most popular breeds of dogs right now. In fact, I am told registered English Bulldog puppies typically cost $1,500 to $2,000. So seeing them advertised on the web for $500 is a real bargain. One these folks fell for – sending hundred of dollars via Western Union to Colorado Springs. Only – they never got a dog.
They say the slick advertiser is a 20 year old girl named Sarah Vail – who was living in Colorado Springs. Jessica says Sarah claimed to be on base at Fort Carson – was being deployed and needed to find a good home for her baby bulldogs – Mini and Juliet. “I found out she was lying.”
This man, Paul Ranga says Sarah fooled him too. He says he rented a room in the same house as Sarah a few weeks ago. Paul says Sarah used his credit card to charge rental cars and used him and his name to pick up money from Western Union. “She wanted my help in all of this and said she would compensate me pretty well.” “I trusted her and then I came to realize you know, this could be a scam.”
Now the District Attorney’s office is investigating Sarah and Paul for felony theft, after receiving six complains totaling more than $2,100.00.
Sarah’s landlord tells me – he kicked her out for not paying rent and doesn’t know where she is.
“Every victim I talked to says they feel stupid and embarrassed for sending money without getting more details.”
If you buy anything over the Internet, find out who you are dealing with and check their track record. Only use a credit card. If the price is too good or anything else raises your suspicion – beware. One you let go of your hard-earned money, it could be difficult to get it back.
