If you have ever scraped a knuckle or cut a toe you know how tough those spots are to bandage. Two companies are new heavily advertising a solution, liquid bandages. Consumer Reports tested to see if they live up to their claims.

This commercial shows a variety of hard-to-bandage spots and promises a solution. "Introducing the Liquid Bandage from Bran-Aid brand." Another commercial, this one for New Skin Liquid Bandage, makes a similar claim, that it's good for hard-to-bandage spots.

Consumer Reports asked suffers to try these two liquid bandages -- the one from Band-Aid and the other from New Skin. Also included, the New Skin Liquid Bandage that is a spray.

They evaluated how easy the bandages are to apply and how well they stay on. As the products claims, all three proved good for hard-to-bandage spots. But panelists found New Skin's spray is hard to aim at small cuts. And both New Skin products have other downsides.

"When we tried them on fresh wounds, they had a tendency to sting and there was a very strong smell as well."

By contrast, the Band-Aid Liquid bandage has a mild odor and does not sting when put on a cut. The panelists reported the Band-Aids last anywhere from 6 hours to more than two days before they started to peel off.

They are pricey. A box of Band-Aid liquid bandages costs close to $9.00. That is about 90 cents each time you use it. If you are shopping for a regular adhesive bandage, Consumer Reports tested those too. It turns out the least expensive have some of the best staying power. They are Curad Plastic bandages that cost just 3 cents apiece.
