Veggie burgers have gone mainstream. Burger King now has a veggie burger on its menu. McDonald's is trying out McVeggie Burger at its restaurants in Canada. And sales are way up for frozen veggie burgers that you cook at home. Consumer Reports checked out your options.

Regina Ciardiello hasn't been in a Burger King in years. She is one of millions of Americans who doesn't eat red meat. But now that there is a BK Veggie burger, she decided to give Burger King another try.

I'd like a veggie burger with lettuce and tomato."

Consumer Reports says the BK veggie burgers have far less fat than Burger Kings' quarter pound burger. The veggie burger has ten grams. The quarter pound burger has 21. And there is a big difference in saturated fat, too.

"The BK Veggie burger has one and half grams of saturated fat, while the quarter pounder has 8 grams."

Along with the BK veggie burger, Consumer Reports also evaluated eight top-selling frozen veggie burgers. Some of them are made primarily of soy protein. While others are mostly made of grains and vegetables.

The one with the least amount of fat -- Veggie Burgers Veggies and Grain -- had just one gram per patty. But the flavor was disappointing.

"They were mushy and starchy. And they had a strong taste of cumin and dehydrated dill."

However, several proved very good.

Some of the best included Morningstar Farms Grillers. They taste quite a bit like meat. Another good choice -- Amy's California Burger, which has a toasted nutty whole-grain flavor with mild seasonings. And Gardenburger Original. It is a grain patty with garlic and mushroom flavors.

As for the BK veggie burger Regina's trying, Consumer Reports says it is not quite as good as the best frozen ones, but it is still pretty good.

Consumer Reports found another veggie burger that tasted a lot like grilled beef. It also earned a very good rating. It is from Boca Burger -- The Chef Max's All American Classic. But the manufacturer is making some changes. Boca Burger is going to start flame grilling them and will change their name to All-American Flame Grilled.
