Precautions were taken with two suspicious packages delivered to the Aurora movie theater shooting’s former school Monday. Eventually, both packages were determined to be safe.

The suspect, James Holmes, was a graduate neuroscience student but began the process of dropping out of the program last month. The mass shooting occurred early Friday morning.

The first suspicious package reported Monday was in Building 500, the former Fitzsimons Army Hospital, and the building was locked down at 6:45 a.m. It was slipped under a door while the building was mostly empty.

Employees were allowed to return to that building at 11:34 a.m. So far, no one has said what the package was or where it came from.

The second package was reported in the Facilities Services Building. The building was evacuated at 12:26 p.m. and cleared for the return of employees at 3:06 p.m.

In that case as well, no information was released about the contents or origin.

At a press conference Monday afternoon, representatives of the University of Colorado Denver refused to answer questions about James Holmes. They did, however, speak about the program in which he was enrolled.

They said Holmes received a stipend of $26,000 a year and his tuition was paid. But he began the process of dropping out of the program last month. They say Holmes didn’t tell them why he was withdrawing, even though they urged him to explain the move.

The school’s representative wouldn’t say whether they saw any signs of academic or behavioral trouble.
