Following the mass shooting in an Aurora movie theater, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation has reported an increase in background checks for firearm sales.
According to the CBI’s InstaCheck Unit, 1,216 background checks were approved on Friday, during the hours after the shooting. The average for Fridays so far in July is 972, and 710 for Fridays during 2011.
The trend was similarly increased over the weekend. 1,243 were approved Saturday, up from an average of 1,007 and 428 were approved Sunday whereas the average is 338.
The InstaCheck Unit is responsible for checking the backgrounds of anyone who applies to purchase a firearm. Someone can be rejected for a record that includes any of a variety of crimes. Data released at the end of June indicated that a total of 3,285 applications were rejected so far during 2012.
The Aurora theater shooting suspect, James Holmes, owned four weapons. Aurora Police Chief Daniel Oates has reported they were all purchased legally.
The CBI released these numbers for background checks related to gun purchases each Friday, Saturday and Sunday in July:
Sunday, July 1 315
Friday, July 6 820
Sat., July 7 929
Sunday, July 8 329
Friday, July 13 880
Sat., July 14 849
Sun., July 15 283
Fri., July 20 1,216
Sat., July 21 1,243
Sun., July 22 428
Additionally, Brett Azton reports an increase in his business. He runs Rock Mountain Roosters, a company that provides the courses required for concealed carry permits. "Some instances maybe make people think a little bit stronger about actually following through with something they think they should do anyways," he said.
