Local Charter School Breaks Ground This Month, After Seven Year Wait

Our mission: Rocky Mountain Classical Academy exists to support parents in developing citizens of integrity and character who are equipped with a strong knowledge base and academic skills. The basis of this development is rooted in an academically rigorous, content-rich, classical educational program with Core Knowledge emphasis.

Rocky Mountain Classical Academy will break ground on their new building on Friday, September 27th at 10:00 a.m. In 2006 Rocky Mountain Classical Academy opened its doors to parents seeking as a school of choice in the community. The founding vision of the Rocky Mountain Classical Academy was to create a charter school that “combined classical education with Core Knowledge, creating high standards for all students and providing all students with the tools they need to reach high levels of academic and character achievement.”

To fulfill the vision of becoming one of Colorado’s leading schools, RMCA poised itself to organize, train, and equip its team with the required resources. The school began humbly, operating in rented and shared facilities with a local church. Each day, faculty and staff set up partitions, chairs, and desks to teach. At the day’s close, the same dedicated educators and parents removed the temporary constructions to make way for the building’s other occupants. This spirit permeated the school’s culture. Within a little over a year, RMCA established what today serves as the elementary school campus rented from its Chartering Agency, Falcon School District 49.

Since its opening in August of 2006 with an initial enrollment of 348 students in grades K-8, RMCA’s enrollment has continued to grow. Opening day enrollment for the 2013-14 school year was 1,075 students, currently housed at three sites in Colorado Springs: an Elementary School (K-4) located at 1710 Piros Drive; a Middle School (5-8) located at 3850 Pony Tracks Drive; and a home school (K-8) located at 3525 Akers Drive. After opening six new classes this fall to accommodate the growing demand, the administration, staff, and families are looking forward to the new school which will accommodate the elementary and middle schools on one campus. “Our Elementary Open House was so well attended we had families lined up down the street for over an hour. I am grateful our local fire department attended our event and allowed students to sit in their fire trucks and learn about fire safety while we worked to accommodate our families. All the more reason we are looking forward to having the new school. We have certainly outgrown our current facilities,” said Ms. Fogler, RMCA Chief Administrative Officer.

From its inception, RMCA has strengthened its organization by successfully preserving the passion of its founders while implementing both a strong business model and strong academics anchored in character education, as evidenced by outstanding assessment scores, student leadership, parent volunteerism, community support and a strong district authorizor partnership.
We continue to attract and retain the highest level of professionals impassioned and empowered by the everyday successes in the classroom. The new school will be the realization of a long awaited desire for RMCA to have a permanent home to house an outstanding program started by parents who had a commitment to bettering the education of their children. “Our Founding Parents were so committed to realizing a school of excellence in RMCA, they put up their homes for collateral and thousands of volunteer hours. This is still at the heart of RMCA, parents committed to their child’s education,” said Ms. Fogler.

The groundbreaking ceremony will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. with many of Rocky Mountain Classical Academy and Falcon District 49 Board Members, and city officials attending. The original kindergarten students who now comprise the eighth grade class of 2013/14 will also be given shovels to help break ground on this long awaited new school. The new school will be located at 4620 Antelope Ridge Drive, Colorado Springs, CO 80922.
