USAFA Academy Winds

First Christian Church is presenting the Academy Winds from the United States Air Force Academy Band. This innovative ensemble, including woodwinds, brass, percussion and vocals, will perform classical and folk favorites; solo works for bassoon, French horn, and marimba with organ; as well as patriotic numbers. No admission charge.

Academy Winds is an exciting member of The Academy Band's family of musical ensembles. This innovative sextet includes woodwinds, brass, percussion and vocals. The result is an eclectic performance sure to please. Drawing on fresh, dynamic arrangements, the group presents a wide variety of musical styles, whether renaissance or classical, symphonic favorites, traditional jazz or even the latest pop chart.
Academy Winds supports the USAF Academy Band's missions of community relations, educational outreach and Air Force recruiting. The members of the Academy Winds have studied at outstanding universities and music conservatories, and use their talents to perform public concerts and to offer outreach programs to high school and college students through clinics and master classes. Their musical performances not only entertain but also deliver a memorable patriotic message.
Members of the ensemble are: Master Sergeant Alejandro Vieira, bassoon; Technical Sergeant Julia Taylor; Master Sergeant Susan Govier, clarinet; Technical Sergeant Gerald Welker, French horn; and Airman 1st Class Matthew Levine, percussion.
Works to be performed: Menuet and Hornpipe from “Water Music” and The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba from “Solomon” by G. F. Handel; the National Anthem; Meditation for Marimba and Organ by Paul Creston; Wolfie’s Corner – Latin Jazz; Nocturno for Horn and Organ by Franz Strauss; a work for bassoon and organ; A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square (vocal) by Manning Sherwin; A Touch o’ the Irish- traditional; and patriotic numbers: There She Stands, Armed Services Medley, and America the Beautiful.

St. Peter Crusade for Hot Chocolate 5K Family Fun Run

We are very excited to host the first annual St. Peter Crusade for Hot Chocolate 5K, a family friendly, stroller friendly 5K run/walk. Children 5 and under can join you for FREE. Children 6-12 are only $10 (no mugs however). Cross the finish line and enjoy a steamy cup of hot chocolate from It's a Grind, and post race atmosphere! It will promise to be a super fun family activity!

Please bring your children, strollers welcome; however please leave your furry four legged friends at home. Packet pick-up: Friday, October 3rd, St. Peter Catholic School Gym (South Side Entrance): 124 First Street, Monument, CO 4-7pm. Race Day pick-up: 7-7:45am

SKSF Octo8k Special Run

Special Kids Special Families will hold its 2nd Annual Octo8k/1k Special Run & Wheelchair Derby on Saturday, October 4th starting at 9am at the University Village Colorado at 5280 N Nevada Avenue in Colorado Springs. Runners and walkers of all ages and abilities are welcome to attend! All proceeds from the event will benefit SKSF programs for children and adults with developmental disabilities and special needs. Participants will also be able to enjoy a Business Expo where various companies will be displaying information and offering free services. The Wheelchair Derby, which will begin at 9:30am, is a special attraction designed for individuals in wheelchairs in which they’ll be guided through a maze like course encouraging them to the finish line for a special prize at the end. Don’t miss the early bird registration discount! Discounted race fees for 8k $30; 1k$20; Derby $10. Team pricing up to 15 people $250. Kids 15 & under receive discount.
