7th Annual Latina Voices

The Venue at Library 21C
Colorado and the Pikes Peak region are home to many talented Latinas. Some of them will be showcased at the 7th annual Latina Voices event from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 30 at Library 21C, 1175 Chapel Hills Drive.
The event is free and open to the public. Reservations are not required. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. with substantial refreshments and the program starts at 10 a.m.
The women featured in this year’s event include:
Felicia Chavez is a digital storyteller whose work is featured regularly on National Public Radio. She holds an M.F.A. in Creative Nonfiction from the University of Iowa. She is the former program director to Young Chicago Authors and founder of GirlSpeak, a literary webzine for young women, Chavez teaches creative writing and new media as a Riley Scholar-in-Residence at Colorado College.
She also has taught writing at the University of New Mexico, where she was distinguished as the Most Innovative Instructor of the Year, and the University of Iowa, where she was honored as the Outstanding Teaching Assistant of the Year.
Yolanda Ortega and Debra Gallegos will perform as a musical duo.
Ortega is an actor who has been performing music and theatre in Colorado and the Southwest for more than 40 years as a member of Su Teatro, a Denver theater company. She also has performed as a musician with the company for main stage productions.
She is best known for her dramatic and comedic performances in "Bless Me Ultima,” "El Sol Que Tu Eres," "The Miracle at Tepeyac" and "Chicanos Sing the Blues.” She was recently inducted into the Su Teatro Chicano Music Hall of Fame, along with her long time singing partner, Debra Gallegos.
Gallegos has been performing music and theatre in Colorado and the Southwest since the 1970s. As a member of Su Teatro, she has served as both actor and musician with the company, and has also directed several mainstage productions. She sings across Colorado, directs community theatre productions and works with like-minded performing artists in bringing a progressive voice to the Colorado theatre community.
A long-time Denver city employee, she also has been involved in community empowerment efforts for many years. Now retired, she continues her work as a community volunteer in numerous community-based organizations including KUVO Radio as a co-host of Cancion Mexicana.
Dr. Sylvia Mendez is an associate professor and chair of the Department of Leadership, Research, and Foundations at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Her research centers on the educational achievement and schooling experiences of Mexican-descent youth in the mid-20th century and higher education student success.
She teaches in the Early Childhood Education Program, Elementary Education Program, Leadership Programs, and the Educational Leadership, Research, and Policy Program. She will talk about “Family Dreams for Education.”

Quail Lake Walk

The Falcon Wanderers Volksmarch Club invite you to our Quail Lake walk on. Come join us for an invigorating walk. The walk will start on the west side of the school. Both the 5K (3.1 miles) route and the 10K (6.2 miles) route are rated 2C. Strollers and wheelchairs are not recommended. Restrooms are not available at the start/finish, but one is available at about 3K into the walk. Leashed pets only. The elevation is 5,938 ft. This event is free and open to the public. Register to walk any time between 8:30 am to 12:00 pm, and walk at your own pace, but please finish by 3:00 pm.

It’s Autumn in Colorado! Leaves of many colors are falling to the ground and there is a chill in the air. We’ll learn more about this season in the story “The Twelve Days of Autumn in Colorado.” We’ll look at historic photos of the seasons in Colorado Springs, and then venture outside and collect objects from nature to create our own art. The Craig Walter Band

Craig Walter has performed throughout the United States and is a familiar presence in Colorado Springs venues. He is currently performing at a number of local venues including the Patty Jewett clubhouse, McCabes, Bristol Brewery, Oscars, Jose Muldoons and The Margarita at Pine Creek. He is a singer, song writer and performer who has several records to his credit. 'First Stop', 'Still Learnin' How to Fly' and the recently released 'Driftwood Memories' are collections of Craig's original songs.

S'more Adventure Race

The first annual S'more Adventure Race will be held on September 30, 2017 at Camp Shady Brook, near Deckers, CO!

Each team of 4 will race in a variety of endurance disciplines, including orienteering/navigation, cross-country running/hiking, mountain biking, paddling and other challenges! Runners can look forward to a large vendor area with interactive booths and a food truck fest. Be prepared for an amazing day!

Teams: Each team will consist of four athletes. Categories are male, female and coed.

Competition: Space is limited to the first 50 teams, so register now!

Awards: Awards will be given to the top three teams in each division.
