JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Newscast Producer
REPORTS TO: News Director
DEPARTMENT: News
GENERAL PURPOSE
To produce and write dynamic, quality newscasts that represent the philosophy and standards established by the News Director.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Newscast producer is responsible for setting the editorial tone of each newscast and for working closely with newscast director and executive producer to create a strong presentation. Newscast producer must be a strong newswriter and be able to edit all news copy. Producer works closely with anchors and reporters to develop the content of the newscast and to make sure all copy is accurate, fair, well-written and that all copy follows the style guidelines established by the news director. Must contribute daily content to KKTV.COM and other associated digital products.
OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
To work with newsroom managers to solve problems and create systems to address those problems. Newscast producer is expected to contribute story ideas on a daily basis and to work on long range planning and special assignments. Newscast producer will be asked to assist producers of other newscasts as needed and must be able to fill in as the producer on all other 11 News broadcasts.
SUPERVISORY DUTIES:
Newscast producer must be able to lead all newsroom employees who are working on that newscast. This includes approving reporter, anchor and associate producer copy and making story assignments as necessary under deadline pressure. Newscast producer directly supervises all associate producers and interns assigned to that newscast.
KNOWLEDGE SKILL AND ABILITY:
Position requires a proven ability to produce newscasts with a high level of production values. Candidate should have strong newswriting background with the ability to write quickly and accurately. Position requires extreme attention to detail and solid news judgment. The newscast producer is required to know all newsgathering and libel laws. Candidate needs to understand the creation and use of electronic news graphics and needs a proven ability to write crisp teases and promotional material for the newscast. The newscast producer must be a strong leader with the ability to guide a large group of people under extreme deadline pressure.
EDUCATION OR FORMAL TRAINING:
Applicable college degree required. Appropriate experience may be substituted at employers discretion. Two years producing experience preferred but experience as a news reporter, assignment editor or other applicable journalism experience may be accepted.
EXPERIENCE:
2 years experience as newscast producer at a broadcast station preferred.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
Position requires extensive work at a computer terminal.
