John W. Owens, Jr., is Director of Sports with KKTV Channel 11, Colorado Springs, Colorado.
John Owens was born on July 13 in Franklin, Tennessee. Two years later his family moved to Waynesboro, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Waynesboro High School. He earned a two-year correspondence degree from the Columbia School of Broadcasting in Radio Broadcasting. Associate Degree from Pikes Peak Community College in Radio and Television Broadcasting. Bachelor's Degree from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, in Mass Communications.
John enlisted in the Air Force with basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. Other assignments included: Peterson AFB, Colorado, Rhein Maine AFB, Germany, Enter AFB, Colorado, Air Force Academy, Colorado. He also went remote for one-year to Cape Neweham, Alaska, returning to the Air Force Academy. John retired from the Air Force, with distinction, after serving 21 years and six months.
During his Air Force tours in the Colorado Springs area, John acquired his formal education in the fields of radio and television broadcasting, while maintaining employment on a part-time basis with the local radio station KVOR. John served with KVOR for approximately ten years as a radio announcer delivering music, news, weather and sports.
He began employment with KKTV in 1981. John vied for the position of sportscaster during a local talent search sponsored by KKTV. After hundreds of applicants applied for the position, competition was narrowed to a handful of possibilities. Again, after taping several proxy sports broadcasts with the station, a final selection was made for John Owens to serve as the official Director of Sports.
John Owens is married to the former Lore V. Baker of Monterey, California. They have one daughter, Dr. Tracey Owens Patton, who is married and has recently earned her Doctorate in Philosophy in Communication and Expert in Communication Education from the University of Utah.
