Some major struggles people run into regarding their fitness goals happen in workplace. Whether it is being tempted by fellow worker’s treats, knowing what to eat, keeping track of how much you have consumed, or knowing when to fit in a workout, the workplace can sometimes make or break your success when it comes to becoming healthier.

Here are some tips to keep your eye on the prize and get you on your way to that vacation body you have been trying to attain. You want to make a plan by getting your calories under control and also making time for the gym before/after work. So your success will rely on you controlling your energy coming in (your food), and your energy coming out (your activity).

Let’s begin by focusing on getting your calories under control. Master Trainer Jerod Langnes, with 24-Hour Fitness, says you should plan out your meals for eating four to six times a day. He says you should eat every 2-4 hours. Eating more often will help your body to hold on to lean body mass (muscle), which gives you the ability to burn more calories and get results faster. But there’s another bonus. When you eat on a consistent schedule, you’ll be less likely to give in to the temptation of other people’s bad food options on the job.

Jerod says you also want to make healthy choices regarding your food choices. Look for foods that will give you the best chance for success. Here are some examples:
- Whole grain/whole wheat
- Low fat/reduced fat
- Vegetables
- Fruit (low calorie and in moderation)

According to Jerod, you want to look for food combinations that consist of your personalized ratio of protein, carbs and fat.
The next step to staying fit on a tough work schedule is figuring out a WORKOUT schedule. Find a time that gives you the best chance of staying consistent. See if working out before, during, or after work best fits you. If all you seem to come up with is three days a week, Jerod says don’t stress. You can still have great results. Studies have shown that there has been no real proof of better results of people working out more than three days a week.

To help with all of this, Jerod recommends one tool that he says can make it easier… the Bodybugg. It gives you the ability to know how many calories you are expending every minute of every day (even the calories you’re burning at work!), while letting you compare your calorie burn to your calories consumed. He says Bodybugg’s newest version, the BodybuggSP allows you to monitor your progress through your iPhone, iPod Touch, or Android, giving you real-time monitoring of your progress. Jerod says keeping track of protein, carbs and fats like this, along with other nutrients, will insure your success – especially on the job!

In order to be successful, and win this battle of getting, and staying, in great shape, you must learn the proper habits that keep you on the path of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It is true that it is not easy, but the reward of not having to play this New Year’s Resolution of getting in shape every year, is well worth it. Do it right the first time, and do it right now! Waiting for a more appropriate time, will just make it harder, later.
