COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The 2nd annual Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group’s 7v7 Benefit Tournament was an enormous success over the weekend! Ten elite teams, from all over Colorado, competed in high-level 7v7 competition as an exciting preview of what’s to come this 2014 high school football season. Power-house teams included the reining 4A State Champions Pine Creek High School and 4A State Runner-ups Montrose High School and 3A State Champions Coronado High School and 3A State Runner-ups TCA. Additionally Elizabeth High School, Vista Ridge High School Varsity and JV teams, Sand Creek High School, Manuel High School, Doherty High School joined in and proved they were a force to be reckoned with.
So who came out on top? Saturday afternoon it came down to TCA and Pine Creek High School battling it out to claim the championship spot. Earlier in the double-elimination tournament, Pine Creek lost to TCA in a nail biter in the semi-finals, forcing Pine Creek to earn their way back up the bracket by beating Vista Ridge 30-
12 in the losers’ bracket. Because of Pine Creek’s earlier loss to TCA, and the fact that this was a double elimination tournament and Pine Creek had not lost yet, to claim the title they had to beat TCA twice in order to win the overall tournament. The first game went into an intense overtime where Pine Creek came out victorious. Then, because it was TCA’s first loss, the two teams had to battle again to declare the champion. Pine Creek defeated TCA in their third time playing each other to win the championship 14-12. Pine Creek’s quarterback Tommy Lazzaro, was also named MVP of the tournament. It was a show nonetheless for the passionate crowds!
Kyle Nelson, Chief Executive Officer of Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group stated of the group’s title sponsorship, “It was great to see so many high-level, high school teams out here competing this weekend. On behalf of Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group, we are excited to be a part of this terrific event and glad to be able to help keep these athletes and others, strong and in the action."
Not only was the high level competition a success in prepping these state champion hopefuls for the upcoming football season, the Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group’s 7v7 Benefit Tournament had an even bigger impact. The beneficiary behind Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group’s 7v7 Benefit Tournament is Pro Football Camp.
