USC Tops AP's Top 25

NEW YORK (AP) -- Southern California is the number-one team in The Associated Press preseason Top 25.

It's the third time in the past four years the Trojans will begin the college football season with the top ranking.

USC received 62 of 65 first-place votes from a nationwide media panel and easily outdistanced number-two LSU. The Tigers got two first-place votes. They haven't started a season this high since 1959, when they were preseason number-one.

Third-ranked West Virginia received the other first-place vote. The Mountaineers have never been ranked higher in the preseason. Texas and Michigan round out the top five and defending champion Florida is sixth.

The rest of the top 10 has Wisconsin seventh, followed by Oklahoma, Virginia Tech and Louisville.

Ohio State was last year's preseason number-one but they start the 2007 season with the 11th ranking. California is 12th, followed by Georgia, UCLA and Tennessee.

Number 16 Rutgers is ranked in the preseason for the first time, as is 23rd-ranked Hawaii.
