Despite trailing much of the game, the New Orleans Zephyrs came up with a big eighth inning to beat the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, 7-2, on Tuesday in New Orleans and split the four-game series heading into a league off day.
The Sky Sox (9-10) built a 2-0 lead after 1B Ben Paulsen hit an RBI-double in the second and an RBI-single in the third. That lead lasted until the seventh thanks to five shutout innings by LHP Tyler Matzek. He allowed just two hits, while striking out five and walking five to lower his season ERA to 2.18.
After a shutout inning by RHP Manny Corpas in the sixth, Josh Rodriguez plated Taylor Harbin in the seventh on an RBI groundout.
In the bottom of the eighth, with RHP Greg Burke (2-1) pitching, the Zephyrs loaded the bases with two outs when Harbin put New Orleans ahead for good with a single to score Brian Bogusevic and Kyle Jensen.
The Zephyrs kept tacking on more runs in the next at-bat when Justin Bour smacked his third homer of the season, a three-run shot to right field. New Orleans would score again to take the 7-2 lead.
In the ninth, RHP Chris Hatcher shut the door on a Sky Sox comeback.
Zephyr RHP Chaz Roe (1-1) tossed two scoreless innings and struck out four to pick up the win.
The Sky Sox will return home on Thursday for a four-game series against the Iowa Cubs. RHP Jhoulys Chacin will start his Major League rehab assignment Thursday and will square off against LHP Tsuyoshi Wada (2-1, 0.84), who was the PCL Pitcher of the Week on April 14. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
