CANYON, Texas - After moving up to ninth in the latest national polls, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's cross country team finished fifth at the 2013 NCAA Division II South Central Region Championships in Canyon, Texas, this morning. The team finish will qualify the Mountain Lions for the national championships in two weeks.

Freshman Lina Arista finished first for the Mountain Lions and placed No. 28 out of 152 runners. Arista finished with a time of 22 minutes, 29 seconds on the six-kilometer course and earned All-Region honors with the finish.

Angie Martell and Alyssa Wendt finished within 10 seconds of Arista to place No. 33 and No. 39, respectively. Martell improved on her regional championship team from last season by 19 seconds in 22:35, while Wendt finished in 22:39.

Sam Bauer finished in a time of 22:55 and placed No. 46, and Alyssa Andrews finished as the final scoring runner for UCCS at No. 49 in 22:57. All runners who competed in last season's regional championships improved their time.

The Mountain Lions will be competing as a team at the national championships for the sixth time in program history in two weeks. UCCS has qualified for the national championships in back-to-back seasons as a team for the first time in program history after last season's ninth-place national finish.

The championships will take place at the Plants Ferry Athletic Complex in Spokane, Wash. The women's race will take place at 11:30 a.m. MST.
