COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 24, 2014) - The 2014 men's and women's FIBA Americas U18 Championships both will be held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs, Colo., with USA Basketball playing host to the zone qualifiers that will send the top four finishing teams to the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championships for men and women.
The 2014 FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Men will take place June 20-24, while the 2014 FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Women will be played Aug. 6-10.
"USA Basketball is excited to bring the men's and women's FIBA Americas U18 Championships to Colorado Springs this summer," said Jim Tooley, USA Basketball CEO/Executive Director. "These tournaments will feature some of the best U18 talent from the FIBA Americas zone, which encompasses North, South and Central America, as well as the Caribbean. We look forward to hosting both of these important international competitions in a world-class style, and I know from history that these U18 championships will be very exciting and entertaining competitions."
FIBA Americas will conduct the draw to determine the preliminary round groups for both tournaments later this month.
"The FIBA Americas U18 Championships have become one of the most exciting tournaments in our calendar. To have so much passion shown by the future stars of our basketball is a beautiful thing to watch and we are proud to have USA Basketball once again as hosts of these wonderful events. We know of the huge sacrifices that have to be made in order to host both tournaments and we are thankful to USA Basketball for their commitment to the development of basketball not only within their country but internationally," said Horacio Muratore, FIBA Americas President.
Originally known as the FIBA Americas Junior World Championship Qualifier, the U18 tournament was held every four years between 1990-2006 for men and from 1998-2006 for women. FIBA changed its calendar following the 2006 zone championships, and the tournament is now conducted every other year, followed in the next summer by the FIBA U19 World Championship.
This summer's competitions will mark the third time USA Basketball has played host to both the men's and women's FIBA Americas U18 Championship. Previously, USA Basketball has organized men's U18 tournaments in San Antonio, Texas, in 2006 and 2010, as well as women's U18 tournaments in Colorado Springs in 2006 and 2010.
