COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado Colorado Springs and Colorado State University will face each other in a doubleheader on Nov. 8 at Moby Arena in Fort Collins, Colo. The games will be the season-opening regular season contests for the Rams, while the games will be conducted as exhibition contests for the Mountain Lions.
The UCCS women finished third in the RMAC last season and hosted a first-round conference tournament game. The Mountain Lions return four starters from last season and will welcome several student-athletes back into the lineup after injuries last season kept them on the bench. The Colorado State women finished sixth in the Mountain West last season and fell by two points to Wyoming in the opening round of the Mountain West Championships.
The UCCS men return the RMAC Freshman of the Year Derrick White and add TreShawn Wilford, the Colorado 5A High School Player of the Year, for the 2013-14 season. The Mountain Lions led the conference in offensive and total rebounds per conference game and were fourth in rebounding margin and blocked shots per game. The Rams advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament last season and fell to eventual national champion Louisville, 82-56.
The difference in a regular season game for Colorado State and an exhibition game for UCCS comes from NCAA Division II Bylaw (22.214.171.124), which allows institutions to count up to three contests as discretionary exemptions. An exhibition contest against a non-Division II four-year collegiate institution counts as one of four different categories that institutions may claim, which won’t count against the maximum number of 26 regular season contests.
