AMARILLO, Texas - Laura Gritz shot an 82 in the opening round and the University of Colorado Colorado Springs turned in the best team score of the season in the first round of the West Texas A&M Lady Buff Stampede today at Tascosa Country Club. The Mountain Shots sit in No. 14 at the midway point of the tournament.
UCCS shot a 339 in the opening round, good for 51 strokes over par in the team standings. It's one stroke better than the previous season-best of 52 strokes over par in the final round of the second RMAC event on Sept. 17. The performance is also the best opening-round team score of the season, 13 strokes lower than the first round at the Grizzly Invitational on Sept. 29.
Gritz recorded her second-best round of the season and is tied for No. 29 among the 90 golfers in the field. Jamie Zook matched her season-best with an 85 and tied Amanda Crites' performance to tie for No. 45 overall. Raquell Castillo shot an 87 for the final team score for the Mountain Lions in the first round.
UCCS closes out the inaugural fall season tomorrow morning in the final round in Amarillo. The Mountain Lions will be paired with Regis and Lubbock Christian and start on holes 13-16.
