Starting pitcher Tyler Chatwood (W, 2-0) threw a complete game four-hit shutout to lead the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (18-12) to a 5-0 victory over the Iowa Cubs at Security Service FieldStarting pitcher Tyler Chatwood (W, 2-0) threw a complete game four-hit shutout to lead the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (18-12) to a 5-0 victory over the Iowa Cubs at Security Service Field on $2 Tuesday.

Chatwood’s shutout is the first complete game shutout since Brandon Hynick’s seven inning perfect game against Portland on 6/30/2009. It was also the first nine inning complete game shutout at home since Cory Vance accomplished the feat against Memphis on August 15, 2003. The righty also fanned eight, walked none and only allowed one Iowa Cubs’ hitter to reach second base.

In the fourth inning the Sky Sox offense would give Chatwood the only run support he would need. Cubs’ starting pitcher Nick Struck (L, 0-3) allowed the first two hitters to reach on a lead off walk to Charlie Blackmon and a bunt single by Ryan Wheeler. Ben Paulsen then ripped a two-run double down the left field line to put the Sox up 2-0.

Two innings later the Sky Sox continued to add insurance runs. Wheeler began the inning by hitting a double to right field and advancing to third on an error. After Paulsen grounded out and Tyler Colvin was intentionally walked, Wheeler scored on a balk. Matt McBride then blasted a two-run homer to left to cap the Sox scoring at 5-0.

Chatwood continued his dominance as he rolled through the final innings and locked up the victory. He needed just 89 pitches to dispatch the I-Cubs. The righty faced the minimum in six out of nine innings and saw just four hitters in each of the other three.

Colorado Springs has now won four straight series openers and will look to take its fourth straight 2-0 series lead tomorrow against the Cubs at 11:05 am. Aaron Cook (0-3, 7.40) will take the mound against right hander Barret Loux (2-1, 5.74).

Sky Sox Notes: With his single in the first inning DJ LeMahieu has now had a hit in 16 straight games, which matches Corey Dickerson (4/4-4/25) for the longest streak by a Sky Sox player this season…Chatwood’s CG shutout was also the first by any Sky Sox player against the Iowa Cubs… The complete game shutout was the second of Chatwood’s career with the other coming in 2010 with the Arkansas Travelers (Double-A, Angels)
