Martin Truex Jr. was involved in a multicar crash on the final corner of the final lap in Thursday night's 60-lap Budweiser Duel qualifying race at Daytona International Speedway.
He finished eighth, but will be forced to go to a backup car for Sunday's Daytona 500. Because of going to a backup car, he will lose his front-row starting position and will start from the rear of the field.
The accident was triggered when the No. 48 car (Jimmie Johnson) ran out of gas.
Truex, whose car was on fire when it approached the finish line, was not injured in the incident. He was brought to the infield care center where he was checked over and released.
"It stinks for the guys who have worked so hard on that car," said Truex. "Somebody running out of gas is kind of like you never really think that can happen. It is what it is. We’ll get our back-up out to race. I was told it is just as good. It doesn’t matter where you start here anyhow. We’ll be fine."
