LOUDON, N.H. (July 11, 2014) --- Coming into New Hampshire Motor Speedway Martin Truex Jr. said he wanted to start the second half of the season better than the team performed during the first half of the 2014 campaign.
His first test came Friday at the 1.058-mile flat track where he posted a ninth-place qualifying effort for Sunday's Camping World RV Sales 301. It was his best qualifying effort since claiming the outside pole for the season opening Daytona 500.
Truex's No. 78 Furniture Row/Denver Mattress Chevrolet SS was sixth fastest in the first round of Sprint Cup qualifying and was a among the top-10 fastest in the 12-car final round. Truex's time and speed was 27.877 seconds at 136.629 miles per hour.
"The guys did a great job from practice to qualifying to find a bunch of speed," said Truex, who was 24th fastest in practice. "I am proud of their effort because the starting position is important here. It gives you a good feeling going to bed and getting ready for two practice sessions tomorrow. We learned a lot today that can help us on Sunday. New Hampshire is a special track for me and the Truex family and it would mean a lot to me to run well here.
So far this is a solid start to the second half of the season."
For the record the Truex family -- Martin Sr., Martin Jr and Ryan (younger brother) have all won races at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
The pole winner was Kyle Busch (27.574 at 138.130). Rounding out the top-12 in order were: Jimmie Johnson, Denny Hamlin, Tony Stewart, Jamie McMurray, Joey Logano, Brad Keselowski, Clint Bowyer, Truex, Kasey Kahne, Jeff Gordon and Kevin Harvick.
Sunday's race will be televised on TNT, beginning with a 60-minute prerace show at 10 a.m. MT (noon ET).
