KANSAS CITY, Kan. (May 9, 2014) -- Martin Truex Jr. will start the Furniture Row Racing Chevrolet 26th in Saturday’s 5-Hour Energy 400 at Kansas Speedway.

Truex failed to advance from the first round of qualifying in the three-session “knockout” format. Only the fastest 24 drivers made it to the second session and Truex remained in that group until the final few minutes. His fast lap of 191.761 mph (28.160 seconds) missed the cut by two cars.

“These were just totally different conditions today than when we tested here last month,” said Truex of the April 15th test session the team participated in. “We just couldn’t seem to get the total overall grip we needed to turn one of the fastest qualifying laps. It was really cold here last month – the guys said that the track temperature was only between 50 and 90 degrees all day long. The track is so much hotter out there today.

“But you never know,” added Truex. “This will be the first Cup race run under the lights here tomorrow night. Maybe all those fast guys today in qualifying won’t be so fast in the race.”

In Friday’s practice, Truex was 20th fastest in the opening 90-minute session and clocked in with the 19th-fastest lap in the final “happy hour” session.

Kevin Harvick claimed the Coors Light Pole Award here today with his lap of 194.252 mph (27.799 seconds). It was Harvick’s second pole of the 2014 season and shattered the old track qualifying record (Matt Kenseth, 4/19/2013, 191.864mph). Joey Logano (lap of 193.910 mph) will start second. Brad Keselowski starts third, with Carl Edwards fourth and rookie Kyle Larson fifth. Kurt Busch, Ryan Newman, Tony Stewart, Danica Patrick and Greg Biffle round out tomorrow’s top-10 starters.

Saturday's race will be televised on FOX, beginning with a 30-minute prerace show at 5:00 p.m. MT (6:00 p.m. CT). The 400-mile, 267-lap battle is scheduled to get the green flag just after 6:30 p.m. local time.
