Best to forget this one and move on.
Still, for all the progress Colorado College had made during the last six weeks, Saturday's ugly loss in the 2012-13 home finale resembled a glaring step in the wrong direction.
Minnesota State University erupted for five second-period goals, including three within a span of 50 seconds during a late five-minute power play, and handed the Tigers a 7-2 pasting that earned No. 7-ranked MSU a split of their two-game series at the World Arena.
With the exception of Joe Howe, CC's senior netminder who faced 34 shots before giving way to Josh Thorimbert after 40 minutes of play, referees Scott Bokal and Tom Sterns got the best workouts of the night blowing their whistles. The officiating duo dished out 81 minutes in penalties, including 55 to the Black and Gold.
Sophomore center Matt Leitner recorded a hat trick for the Mavericks, who converted on four of 13 power plays altogether while avenging a 4-1 defeat in Friday's weekend opener. They improved to 21-10-3 overall for the campaign and 15-10-1 in WCHA play, remaining in the thick of seven teams jammed within six points of each other near the top of the standings.
Colorado College, meanwhile, dropped to 13-16-5 overall and 10-12-4 in conference play with only next week's series at Michigan Tech remaining in the regular season. CC can finish no higher than its current position of eighth place, and two weekends from now will be on the road for the first round of the league playoffs for just the third time in the last 20 years.
Freshman goalie Stephon Williams made 26 saves for Minnesota State, which also got a goal and three assists from junior defenseman Josh Nelson along with solo tallies by Brett Knowles, Zach Lehrke and Johnny McInnis.
Senior center Rylan Schwartz and freshman Peter Maric scored for the Tigers, who were assessed three five-minute majors and a pair of subsequent game misconducts. Maric's goal, at 16:53 of the third period, was the first of his collegiate career.
