OREM, Utah – Air Force wrestlers Parker Hines, Marcus Malecek, Anthony McHugh and Jesse Stafford have all been named to the 2013-14 Western Wrestling Conference All-Academic Team, as announced by the league. Meanwhile, nine other Falcons were named to the Coaches’ Honor Roll for the 2013-14 season.
This year’s WWC academic awards honor a total of 77 student-athletes from the six conference schools. This year’s WWC All-Academic squad honors 27 student-athletes, while 50 student-athletes were named to the Coaches’ Honor Roll.
To qualify for the All-Academic team, student-athletes had to secure a minimum 3.20 cumulative grade point average as well as be a starter or key reserve. The Coaches’ Honor Roll recognizes all student-athletes who have maintained a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
Stafford earns his second WWC All-Academic team honor after being named to the Coaches’ Honor Roll as a freshman in 2011. A rising senior from Loomis, Calif., Stafford registered an 18-9 overall record and 7-3 dual mark as the Falcons’ starter at 165 pounds.
Meanwhile, Hines, Malecek and McHugh all receive WWC All-Academic accolades for the first time. Hines, a rising sophomore from Ellsworth, Wis., posted a 3.78 GPA in civil engineering. As a back-up at 184 pounds, Hines compiled a 13-8 overall record on the season.
Malecek, a native of Hammond, Wis., currently holds a 3.69 GPA in systems engineering. The rising junior, who was named to the Coaches’ Honor Roll as a freshman, put together a 16-16 overall mark as the Falcons’ starting heavyweight in 2013-14.
Additionally, McHugh, a native of Lewis Center, Ohio, earned WWC All-Academic accolades with a 3.52 GPA. The rising sophomore, who has not declared a major, posted an 18-4 overall record in open competition, winning 11 of his matches by fall.
Meanwhile, earning spots on the Coaches’ Honor Roll for Air Force were Dan Barringer (Sr., Monument, Colo.), Jack Carda (Jr., Kimball, S.D.), Cody Hancock (Jr., Wrightwood, Calif.), Vance Hawk (Sr., Ridgway, Colo.), Adam Jackson (So., Rosemount, Minn.), Tyler Mergen (So., Monticello, Minn.), Chris Morales (Sr., Rio Rancho, N.M.), Jason Mossing (Jr., Sylvania, Ohio) and Garrett Wells (Jr., Corvallis, Ore.). Jackson, a rising junior, holds the Falcons’ highest GPA, with a 3.79 grade point average as a biology major.
The Western Wrestling Conference is comprised of six schools including the Air Force Academy, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, South Dakota State, Utah Valley State and Wyoming.
