The Rockies add five to active roster

DENVER – The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has recalled right-handed pitchers Mitchell Boggs, Manuel Corpas and Collin McHugh, along with infielder/outfielder Ryan Wheeler from Triple-A Colorado Springs. In addition, the club has activated outfielder Carlos Gonzalez from the 15-day disabled list. All five will be available for tonight’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers (6:40 p.m. MDT) at Coors Field.

Boggs, 29, will be making his second stint with Colorado this season after being acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals on July 9. In his first stint on the Rockies active roster, he made two relief appearances without allowing a run over 1.2 innings. He began the season on the Cardinals’ Opening Day roster where he went 0-3 with two saves and an 11.05 ERA (14.2 ip, 20 er) in 18 games before being optioned to Triple-A Memphis. The Dalton, Georgia native has appeared in 234 career Major League games with 15 starts and has gone 13-15 with six saves and a 4.13 ERA (309.2 ip, 142 er). Boggs will wear #41.

Corpas, 31, pitched in 19 games for Colorado during his first sting at the Major League level after beginning the year with Triple-A Colorado Springs. In those 19 games, he went 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA (32.0 ip, 16 er), allowed 29 hits, walked 12 and struck out 22. The Panama City native has spent the majority of his career with Colorado (2006-2011, 2013) and is 13-20 with 34 saves and a 4.12 ERA (364.2 ip, 167 er) over 347 career Major League games, all in relief. Corpas will wear #60.

McHugh, 26, is making his second stint with Colorado and third this year at the Major League level. In his season debut for the Rockies on July 27 vs. Milwaukee, he went 5.0 innings and allowed six runs on nine hits. The Berry College product was acquired from the New York Mets on June 18 for outfielder Eric Young Jr. and has gone 0-2 with a 10.50 ERA (12.0 ip, 14 er) in four games, two starts, for the Mets and Rockies. In 12 career Major League games, he’s made six starts and has gone 0-6 with an 8.64 ERA (33.1 ip, 32 er). McHugh will wear #43.

Wheeler, 25, has already made two stints on the Rockies active roster this year batting .211 (4-for-19) with 2 doubles, 2 RBI and a run. In his most recent stint from August 19-27, he went 3-for-10 with a double and 2 RBI in four games. Wheeler has spent the remainder of the season at Triple-A Colorado Springs, where he has hit .306 (134-for-438) with 29 doubles, 2 triples, 12 home runs, 89 RBI and 74 runs in 116 games. In 60 career games in the Majors he has batted .234 (30-for-128) with 8 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run and 12 RBI. Wheeler will wear #4.

Gonzalez, 27, played in 103 games for the Rockies this year hitting .302 (118-for-391) with 23 doubles, 6 triples, 26 home runs, 70 RBI and 72 runs along with 21 stolen bases before being placed on the disabled list. At the time of being placed on the disabled list, he led the NL in total bases, slugging percentage and outfield assists, and was tied for second in home runs. The two-time Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner has a .300 (766-for-2557) career average with 151 doubles, 31 triples, 125 home runs, 419 RBI, 448 runs and 107 stolen bases in 684 Major League games.

The Rockies currently have 39 on the 40-man roster.
