SALT LAKE CITY - A seventh-inning unearned run turned out to be the difference in the game, as the Colorado Spring Sky Sox edged the Salt Lake Bees 9-8 on Saturday night.
The game was tied at 8-8 with two outs and no runners on base when Brandon Roberts singled to left. Omir Santos hit a comebacker to Bees’ pitcher Matt Meyer, whose throw bounced away from Efren Navarro at first to extend the inning. Tim Wheeler followed with a single to right field to bring home Roberts with what turned out to be the winning run. Meyer (1-1) takes the loss, as it snaps the Bees’ seven-game home winning streak.
The Bees had trailed 6-3 in the fifth when they rallied to score five and take the lead on a two-run triple by John Hester, an RBI single by Ed Lucas to tie the game and a two-run homer by Cory Aldridge on a 3-0 pitch gave Salt Lake an 8-6 lead. Navarro had two hits and one run batted in to lead the Bees, while Andrew Romine and Kole Calhoun added two hits each. Hester would close out the night with one hit and three RBI.
"Obviously we've got our hands full with this Colorado Springs team that's been playing pretty good baseball," said Bees Manager Keith Johnson. "We match up pretty evenly with them. Our records were even and as you saw tonight, they got one extra inning than we got."
