The Salt Lake Bees defeated the Colorado Springs Sky Sox 2-1 on Thursday night, earning the series split as Jimmy Swift's pop fly to right brought home Roberto Lopez for the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning. With the score tied 1-1, Lopez led off the ninth with a double to left-center. Luke Carlin laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Lopez to third just in time for Swift's sacrifice fly.
“As soon as he (Colorado Springs' rightfielder) caught it, I was just going for it, and trying to avoid the tag," said Lopez. “It’s awesome, it’s a great feeling. It was a great game, it was a close game. Everybody was having good at-bats throughout the day. Our pitchers were doing a great job. Everybody was battling.”
Bees starter A.J. Schugel pitched six and one third innings allowing six hits and one run with five strikeouts but would leave the game tied at 1-1. Mitch Stetter earned his second consecutive victory with a scoreless inning and two thirds with two strikeouts. Luis Rodriguez extended his hit streak to 11 games while Efren Navarro's hit streak jumped to nine games. Navarro and Oeltjen led the Bees with two hits each.
“Schugel did a great job for us tonight and the bullpen came in and did a great job," said Bees manager Keith Johnson. "We were able to scratch across a couple of runs and get the W. Overall, it was one of our better games that we’ve had over the last few weeks.”
