Three Colorado Springs pitchers combined on a six-hit shutout, as the Sky Sox blanked the Salt Lake Bees 7-0 on Tuesday afternoon. Starter Chris Volstad (3-1) pitched the first seven innings and allowed just four hits with one walk and one strikeout. The first two Salt Lake batters; Andrew Romine and Tommy Field, singled in the first, but Volstad got the next three batters to foul out to end the threat. Nick Schmidt and Steven Hensley combined for two scoreless innings to close out the game, as Salt Lake was shut out for the second time this season. Offensively, the Sky Sox scored one run in the first, one in each inning from the fifth through the eighth and two more in the ninth while belting four home runs.
Barry Enright (2-3) pitched well, but took the loss for the Bees. He went six innings and allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits with no strikeouts or walks. The Bees managed just six hits with Romine leading the way with two singles. Field, Efren Navarro and Matt Long each added a single, while John Hester chipped in with a double, as Salt Lake's five-game winning streak came to an end.
“It was a good series for us,” said interim Bees manager Bill Richardson. “We had a setback today against a good team, and that’s going to happen. Now you enjoy your off day and go right back to work to win another series.”
