Fresno righty Shane Loux shutdown the potent Sky Sox offense as he tossed a complete game and limited the PCL’s highest hitting team to just three hits as the Grizzlies won 8-1 on Memorial Day in front of 3,453 fans at Security Service Field. The loss for the Sox snaps their season-high five-game winning-streak.
Loux threw 107 pitches and surrendered a single to Tyler Colvin in the second, a double Josh Rutledge in the fourth and a walk to Ryan Wheeler in the seventh but none moved further. In the sixth, pinch-hitter Hernan Iribarren tripled off Loux and scored on a RBI groundout by Corey Dickerson for the Sky Sox’ only run of the day and that was the extent of the offense for Colorado Springs.
On the other side, Fresno scored several runs early on to give Loux more than enough run support. The Grizz took advantage of two Sox errors in the first as they scored twice to take an early lead. Centerfielder Gary Brown drove in two more in the second on a two-run single to double the lead to 4-0 and was then part of a three-run fourth as well as Fresno sprinted out to a 7-0 lead. Brown finished the game 2-for-5 with four RBI. The final run for Fresno came in the eighth as Roger Kieshnick led off the inning with a double and then scored on a Johnny Monell RBI single.
Jeff Manship took the loss for the Sox after giving up seven runs, five earned, on seven hits over six innings of work.
The nine-inning effort for Loux was the first complete game for a Fresno pitcher at Security Service Field since Brad Hennessey beat the Sky Sox 2-1 on July 14, 2008. The last complete game for any opposing pitcher in Colorado Springs was tossed by Chris Seddon of Tacoma on June 15, 2010 in a 7-0 shutout.
Despite the loss, the Sky Sox still won the series 3-1 and are now 6-2 against Fresno this season.
The Sky Sox will start a big four-game series tomorrow night against division rival Tacoma. The two clubs have been neck-and-neck all season at the top of the division standings and will face each other for the first time in this series. Game one will start at 7:05 PM and feature RH Drew Carpenter (0-0, 4.70) for the Sky Sox versus RH Jeremy Bonderman (2-4, 4.68).
