The Rockies ended their Arizona tour with a 6-2 loss to the Brewers. Colorado finished the Spring with a 7-6 record at Salt River Fields. Over the first three seasons as Salt River Fields being the club’s Cactus League home (2011-13) they are a combined 44-42-2.
Both teams traded runs in the first inning. Josh Rutledge reached base on a fielder’s choice and scored from first base when Carlos Gonzalez hit a deep double to center field. Milwaukee plated four runs in the third to give them a 5-1 lead until the sixth inning. Tyler Massey, a minor leaguer who replaced Michael Cuddyer in the fifth inning, came to bat for the first time and launched a 1-0 pitch over the right field wall. The Brewers would add a run in the eighth making the final score in their favor, 6-2.
Dexter Fowler went 2-for-2 on the afternoon with a double and is now hitting .412 (21-for-51). Five of the Rockies six hits were for extra bases with four doubles (Todd Helton, Gonzalez, Fowler and Reid Brignac) and Massey’s home run.
Over on the Arizona side of SRF, Jorge De La Rosa pitched in the Rockies Triple-A game against the Diamondbacks that featured Jason Kubel and Miguel Montero. De La Rosa went six full innings and allowed just one run on three hits, with two walks and four strikeouts.
