Rockies win other split squad game against Cubs on Wednesday

The Rockies visited Mesa to face the Chicago Cubs as part of a split squad day in which the club also played the Texas Rangers in Surprise. The Rockies (3-5) defeated the Cubs 7-5 in Mesa. The Rockies offense got off to a good start when Charlie Blackmon led off the game with a triple and scored two batters later on a Carlos Gonzalez RBI groundout. The Rockies added two more in the 3rd inning when Gonzalez notched his 2nd RBI of the game with a bases loaded walk. Troy Tulowitzki followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Rockies a 3-1 lead. After the Cubs tied the game in the 6th, the Rockies broke the tie in the 7th when Rosell Herrera drove home two with a bases loaded single, then an error on the third baseman brought home Matt McBride and Herrera resulting in a four-run play for the Rockies. Tyler Chatwood started the game and allowed one unearned run in 2.2 innings with 3 strikeouts. Rex Brothers, Tommy Kahnle, Wilton Lopez and Scott Oberg all had scoreless appearances in relief for the Rockies.

Colorado is on the road again tomorrow as they take on the Milwaukee Brewers in Maryvale beginning at 1:05 p.m. MST.
