The Rockies made their first “true” road trip of Spring Training today as they visited HoHoKam Park to take on the Chicago Cubs. Despite outhitting the Cubs eight to six, Colorado was handed a 4-2 loss and are now 2-2 (.500) on the spring season. The Cubs got the first run of the game in the third inning but the Rockies would tie it up in the top half of the fourth. Carlos Gonzalez led off the inning with a walk and stole second to put him in scoring position. Michael Cuddyer would advance CarGo to third then Ben Paulson drove him in with a single to center field. Chicago took the lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth and added another in the sixth to take a 3-1 advantage. D.J. LeMahieu, subbing in for Jonathan Herrera, hit a triple to center field to lead off the eighth inning and scored a batter later when Tim Wheeler hit a sacrifice fly. Chicago would score the final run of the game in the eighth. Starting his first game of the spring, Jhoulys Chacin pitched two scoreless innings and faced the minimum six batters with one strikeout. Rex Brothers made his second scoreless appearance striking out one batter in his inning of work today. Next up for the Rockies is a trip to Peoria tomorrow to take on the San Diego Padres. Tyler Chatwood will be the starter for the Rockies followed by Drew Pomeranz. Sean O’Sullivan will be the Friars starting hurler.
