The Rockies handed the Texas Rangers a 9-1 loss on Monday afternoon at Salt River Fields. Right-hander Chris Volstad took the mound to start the game and tossed two scoreless innings giving up two hits in his Rockies’ spring training debut. Colorado was inactive until the third inning when Charlie Blackmon led off the inning with a double to left field and later scored on a DJ LeMahieu RBI single. In the same inning, Troy Tulowitzki added a two-run single to give the Rockies a 3-0 lead. Dexter Fowler would add to the Rockies lead in the fifth inning when he hit a triple that bounced off the top of the batter’s eye in center field scoring Eric Young Jr., who reached base on a walk. The Rangers scored a run in the top of the sixth but Colorado would get that run back and more in the eighth inning. Rafael Ortega led off the inning with a triple down the right field line and would score two batters later when Ben Paulson drove him in with a single to center field. Later that inning, Charlie Culberson blasted a three-run shot to left field and Nolan Arenado belted a solo home run to give the home team a 9-1 lead that would stand at the end of the game. Danny Rosenbaum, who relieved Volstad, also pitched two scoreless innings (1 h, 1 bb), while relievers Wilton Lopez (1 so), Jeff Manship (2 so), Will Harris and Rob Scahill (2 bb) each contributed with an inning of scoreless ball. The Rockies travel to Mesa on Tuesday afternoon to take on the Chicago Cubs with first pitch scheduled for 1:05 pm. Jhoulys Chacin and Edwin Jackson are the scheduled starters.
