DENVER – The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has recalled left-handed pitcher Tyler Matzek from Triple-A Colorado Springs. Additionally, the club has optioned right-handed pitcher Chad Bettis to Colorado Springs. Matzek (#46) is scheduled to start for the Rockies tonight against the Braves at Coors Field (6:40 p.m. MDT).
Matzek, 23, will make his Major League debut tonight becoming the fifth Rockies pitcher to make his MLB debut this season and third in a six-day span. He opened up the 2014 season at Triple-A Colorado Springs after attending his first Major League Spring Training and has gone 5-4 with a 4.05 ERA (66.2 ip, 30 er) in 12 starts for the Sky Sox. The left-hander has gone 2-2 with a 6.75 ERA (29.1 ip, 22 er) in six home starts at Security Service Field and is 3-2 with a 1.93 ERA (37.1 ip, 8 er) in six road starts. From May 11-27, Matzek won each of his four starts allowing just three earned runs (9 runs) over 24.2 ip (1.09 ERA). The Rockies 1st round pick (11th overall) of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of Capistrano Valley High School in Mission Viejo, CA has gone 29-29 with a 4.34 ERA (537.2 ip, 259 er) in 106 career Minor League starts.
Bettis, 25, made one appearance since being recalled for the third time on June 9. In 13 Major League games this season, Bettis has gone 0-1 with an 10.05 ERA (14.1 ip, 16 er). In 29 career Major League games, including eight starts, Bettis is 1-4 with a 6.71 ERA (59.0 ip, 44 er), 25 walks and 37 strikeouts. The 6-foot-1 right-hander was originally drafted by Colorado in the second round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft out of Texas Tech University.
The Rockies currently have a full 40-man roster.
