Rockies Place Rafael Betancourt on the 15-day DL

DENVER – The Colorado Rockies announced today that they have placed right-handed pitcher Rafael Betancourt on the 15-day disabled list with appendicitis (retroactive to July 15). In addition, the Rockies have recalled right-handed pitcher Mitchell Boggs from Double-A Tulsa. Boggs (#41) will be available for tonight’s game vs. the Chicago Cubs (6:10 p.m. MDT) at Coors Field.

Betancourt, 38, has appeared in 28 games for the Rockies this season finishing 26 games and collecting 15 saves in 16 opportunities. His 93.8 percent save conversion is tied for second in the National League and tied for fifth in the Majors. He has successfully converted a save in each of his last four appearances, all coming on the last road trip (4.0 ip, 4 h, 1 er, 1 bb, 1k). He converted 10-straight save opportunities to begin the season going 1-1 with a 1.65 ERA (16.1 ip, 3 er) over his first 17 games. Betancourt has appeared in 631 Major League games and has gone 36-31 with 73 saves and a 3.15 ERA (643.1 ip, 225 er).

Boggs, 29, was acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals on July 9 in exchange for one international signing bonus slot after beginning the season on St. Louis’ Opening Day roster and appearing in 18 games, including three starts, for Triple-A Memphis. After being acquired, he was optioned to Double-A Tulsa where he has made four appearances converting one save with a 1.50 ERA (6.0 ip, 2 h, 1 er). In 2012, Boggs led the National League with 34 holds while going 4-1 with a 2.21 ERA (73.1 ip, 18 er) in a career-high 78 games. The Dalton, Georgia native has appeared in 232 career Major League games with 15 starts and has gone 13-15 with six saves and a 4.15 ERA (308.0 ip, 142 er).

The Rockies currently have a full 40-man roster.
