Rockies Place Carlos Gonzalez on 15-Day Disabled List

DENVER – The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has placed outfielder Carlos Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained joint of the right middle finger (retroactive to August 5). In addition, the club has recalled left-handed pitcher Jeff Francis from Triple-A Colorado Springs. Francis (#26) will be available for tonight’s game against the New York Mets at Citi Field (5:10 p.m. MT).

Gonzalez, 27, has played in 103 games for the Rockies this year, hitting .302 (118-for-391) with 23 doubles, 6 triples, 26 home runs, 70 RBI and 72 runs along with 21 stolen bases before being placed on the disabled list. He made his second career All-Star Game after being voted a National League starter by the fans. He currently leads the NL in total bases (231), slugging percentage (.591) and outfield assists (11), and is tied for second in home runs (26). The two-time Rawlings Gold Glove Award winner has a .300 (766-for-2557) career average with 151 doubles, 31 triples, 125 home runs, 419 RBI, 448 runs and 107 stolen bases in 684 Major League games.

Francis, 32, was a member of the Rockies Opening Day roster and has pitched in 12 games with 11 starts between two stints for Colorado this season. During his first recall for Colorado and in his new role coming out of the bullpen, Francis made his second career relief appearance on July 30 in Atlanta (2.1 ip, 3 h, 2 r). On the year for the Sky Sox, he has pitched in 11 games, starting six of them and going 2-2 with a 4.4.34 ERA (37.1 ip, 18 er) striking out 33 compared to nine walks. A veteran of nine Major League seasons with Colorado (2004-2010, 2012-13) and Kansas City (2011), Francis has appeared in 217 career games with 215 starts and has gone 69-78 with a 4.93 ERA (1233.0 ip, 676 er), 366 walks and 816 strikeouts.

The Rockies currently have a full 40-man roster.
