DENVER – The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has activated outfielder Carlos Gonzalez from the 15-day disabled list. To make room on the active roster for Gonzalez, the Rockies optioned right-handed pitcher Jair Jurrjens to Triple-A, a move that occurred following Wednesday’s game vs. San Diego. Gonzalez (#5) will be available for tonight’s Rockies vs. Twins game at Coors Field (6:40 p.m. MDT).
Gonzalez, 28, is resurrected from the disabled list after missing 35 games due to a left index finger inflammation. The Rockies went 11-24 in his absence. Before his DL stint, Carlos started 52 games while hitting .255 (50-for-196) with 12 doubles, a triple, 8 home runs, 31 RBI and 27 runs scored. He made four rehab appearances with Colorado Springs earlier this week going 5-for-13 (.385) with a double, triple, home run, 6 RBI and 4 runs scored. Gonzalez is in his sixth season with Colorado where he owns a .303 average, sixth best in franchise history, and 129 home runs, seventh most. He has been selected to two National League All-Star teams (2012-13) and won three Gold Gloves (2010, 2012-13).
Jurrjens, 28, joins Colorado Springs, his second Triple-A team this season after starting the year with Louisville of the Cincinnati Reds organization. He made two starts for the Rockies during this current homestand going 0-1 with a 10.61 ERA (9.1 ip, 11 er) and 9 strikeouts. The Rockies lost his first game in which he faced off against Clayton Kershaw but were victorious in his second game against the San Diego Padres. The Rockies were Jair’s fourth Major League club after playing for the Tigers (2007), Braves (2008-12) and Orioles (2013). He has compiled a 53-38 record and a 3.72 ERA in 130 career MLB games.
