NDIANAPOLIS – The Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves earned their highest ever seed for the NCAA Division II Women's Basketball Championship and will play St. Mary's (Texas) in their first tournament game, according to the championship brackets announced on the NCAA.com Selection Show, Sunday evening.
The Pack, who are 22-8 thus far, are the fourth seed in the South Central Region and will play the fifth-seeded Rattlers in a first-round game to be played in Canyon, Texas at West Texas A&M University's First United Bank Center. St. Mary's is 19-9 after falling in the Heartland Conference Championship game on Saturday in Laredo, Texas.
The tip-off time has not yet been announced but will be posted on GoThunderWolves.com.
Ticket information will also be posted as soon as it is available.
The selection is CSU-Pueblo's sixth overall and the fifth in the last seven years. This marks the second time that the ThunderWolves were selected "at-large". In their first four trips, the ThunderWolves went in to the NCAA Tournament automatically after winning Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Shootout titles.
The Pack were the No. 5 seed in 2012, their last NCAA Tournament appearance.
The winner of Friday's match-up will play the winner of the West Texas A&M/St. Edward's (Texas) regional quarterfinal in one semifinal on Saturday (Mar. 15). West Texas A&M is the top seed and will host the regional after winning the Lone Star Conference's regular season and championship titles. St. Edward's, not in last week's regional top-10 rankings, won the Heartland Conference title over St. Mary's to earn that league's automatic spot and the No. 8 seed.
On the other half of the bracket, No. 2 seed Colorado Mesa will play No. 7 Midwestern State (Texas) while No. 3 Tarleton State (Texas) will meet No. 6 Texas A&M-International.
The regional championship game will be played Monday, Mar. 17.
The champion of each of the eight regions from around the country will advance to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight to be played Mar. 25, 26 and 28 in Erie, Pa.
CSU-Pueblo, which is 1-5 in its' previous appearances, has never played the Rattlers, who will be making their eighth NCAA Tournament appearance. St. Mary's, which hails from San Antonio, is 1-7 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
The ThunderWolves have already matched their school-record for wins in a season and can set a new record with a win on Friday. The 2008-09 team went 22-9.
