Air Force women’s basketball head coach Andrea Williams has announced the additions of Pat Filien and Capt. Katie Jannazo to the Falcons’ coaching staff. Filien, who has nearly 20 years experience in coaching collegiate men’s basketball, will serve as the associate head coach, while Jannazo joins the staff as the military coach.

“We’re very happy to have Pat joining our staff,” said Williams. “We gain in a lot of areas that we want to improve in our program across the board. He brings enthusiasm, basketball knowledge and many years of Division I collegiate experience on the men’s side. He has the ability to build a team—the patience and the vision to stick to it with the recruiting process and the building process, and seeing it all the way through.”

Prior to his arrival at the Academy, Filien spent 10 years in the America East Conference as a men’s assistant coach at The University at Albany and The University of Vermont, respectively. During his six year tenure at Albany, the Great Danes won two conference championships and made a pair of NCAA appearances, nearly upsetting No. 1 overall seed UConn in the first round in 2006. He had additional duties with regard to player development, coordination of strength & conditioning and academics.

At Vermont from 2001-05, Filien was responsible for recruiting, scouting and skill development as a member of Tom Brennan’s staff. The Catamounts enjoyed unparalleled success during his years with the program. Vermont made three NCAA Tournament appearances, captured three America East Conference championships and posted four consecutive 20-win campaigns.

Filien played a key role in the progress of forward Taylor Coppenrath, a three-time America East Player of the Year, as well as three-time first-team all-conference guard TJ Sorrentine, who led Vermont to a 25-7 overall record in 2004-05 and an NCAA Tournament first-round upset victory over Big East champion Syracuse.

A native of Queens, N.Y., Filien was a two-year starter at the College of Saint Rose, where he received a B.A. in public communication in 1993. He was named to the All-ECAC-South second team as a senior, when the Golden Knights posted a 25-6 record and reached the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Filien began his coaching career at Southern Vermont College, where he worked from 1993-96. He then moved to Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania for two years, before a three-year stint at C.W. Post-Long Island in Brookville, N.Y.

“Coach Filien is a tremendous asset—he’s a great coach with player relationships and a role model for my staff and the rest of us,” continued Williams. “We’re excited about this new journey together and look forward to having him represent the Air Force Academy in a tremendous way.”

Meanwhile, Jannazo comes to the Academy from Hanscom AFB, Mass., where she served as the project engineer for Advanced Development for the Airspace Mission Planning Division, Electronic Systems Center. Jannazo is a 2008 graduate of Notre Dame, where she was a member of the women’s track and field team which won Big East titles in 2006 (indoor) and 2007 (outdoor).

“We’re excited to bring Katie on board,” said Williams. “What she brings to the table is Division I experience as a track athlete in the Big East and knowledge of the working Air Force. She was an engineering major and has used it in her career, so it’s huge for our kids to have a mentor with real-world experience. It’s great to have her in that other coaching/mentoring position on my staff.”
