COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Leina Kim of Colorada State University-Pueblo and Matt Brown of Colorado School of Mines have been named the 2013-14 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Athletes of the Month for September 2013. The league’s 14 sports information directors nominate student-athletes from their institution which are then selected by the RMAC office.
Kim was named the RMAC Golfer of the Week all three times the award was selected in the month of September, winning two tournaments and finishing a third as the top RMAC placer. She set a school and RMAC record with a 3-under-par 69 at the RMAC #1 at Desert Hawk Golf Course in Pueblo West, Colo. Her highest round of the season is a 4-over-par 76, averaging an RMAC-best 72.9 strokes per round over six rounds of competition. She is the second women's golfer to receive the award since it began in 2009, and the third ThunderWolf selected, after Laurel Kearsley and Jesse Hillhouse (twice) in 2012-13.
Brown led Mines to a 3-1 record during the month of September, including a 2-0 record in RMAC games. The Limon, Colo., native finished 117-of-167 (71.7 completion percent) for 1,288 yards, 13 touchdowns and three interceptions. Brown also added 366 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 64 carries (5.71 yards per carry), including 133 rushing yards on 23 carries in Mines’ 27-24 loss to then-No. 11 Carson-Newman. He finished 31-of-40 for 380 yards and six touchdowns in Mines’ 62-22 win over Black Hills State in Spearfish, S.D., and opened with 401 yards on 37-of-51 passing and six total touchdowns in Mines’ 72-6 win over South Dakota Mines to start the season. He recorded two games with six total touchdowns and posted at least three scores in every game. He was twice named the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week and also earned USA College Football Division II National Offensive Player of the Week honors as well. Brown is currently third nationally with an average of 413.5 yards of total offense per game. This is Brown's second RMAC Athlete of the month selection, having previously been named Athlete of the Month in September of 2012. He is one of four RMAC football student-athletes to receive the award since 2009, and the only active player.
