COLORADO SPRINGS – As expected, Gustav Olofsson heard his name called in the National Hockey League's 2013 entry draft.

He probably had not dreamt that it would be so early.

Olofsson, who will be a freshman defenseman at Colorado College three months from now, was selected by the Minnesota Wild as the team's No. 1 choice midway through the second round in Newark, N.J., on Sunday.

The Wild, which had traded away its first-round opportunity, picked him 46th overall nearly four hours into the draft.

Olofsson will be among five players on CC's 2013-14 roster to have been drafted by NHL teams, joining fellow freshman Jaccob Slavin (Carolina 2012), sophomore Hunter Fejes (Phoenix 2012), junior Aaron Harstad (Winnipeg 2011) and junior Peter Stoykewych (Winnipeg, then Atlanta 2010) in that distinction. All except Fejes, who played left wing for the Tigers last campaign, are defensemen.
A graduate of Broomfield High School, which he attended after moving with his family to Colorado from Sweden in 2010, Olofsson logged 23 points (2g,21a) in 67 games overall with the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League last season. He was named to the USHL All-Rookie Team and selected to participate in the league's annual NHL Top Prospects game. Previously, in 2011-12, he helped the Colorado Thunderbirds of the Tier I Elite Hockey League win a Rocky Mountain District title in the under-18 ranks.
