FONTANA, Calif. (March 21, 2014) -- Martin Truex Jr. advanced to the final round in Friday's qualifying and will start 12th in Sunday's Auto Club 400 Sprint Cup Series race.
Truex, driving the No. 78 Furniture Row/Denver Mattress Chevrolet, was seventh fastest out of 43 drivers in the first round, 12th out of 24 in the second round and then proceeded to finish 12th in the third and final round.
"Considering how we struggled in practice, this was a great rebound," said Truex, who was 18th fastest in practice. "Give credit to our Furniture Row guys who kept on plugging away to find a better balance for this track. It's a good feeling to start close to the front. The next step is to make similar gains with our race trim setup during Saturday's two practice sessions."
Truex's times and speeds in the first three rounds on the 2-mile Auto Club Speedway oval were: 38.602 seconds at 186.519 mph (first round), 38.808/185.529 (second round) and 38.767/185.725 (third round).
The pole winner was Matt Kenseth, whose final round time and speed were 38.438 at 187.315. Rounding out the top-12 in order were: Brad Keselowski, Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer, Jeff Gordon, Joey Logano, Marcos Ambrose, Carl Edwards, Tony Stewart, Kyle Larson and Truex.
Sunday's race will be televised on FOX, beginning with a 30-minute prerace show at 12:30 p.m. MT (11:30 a.m. local time).
