BOULDER — University of Colorado junior outside hitter Taylor Simpson and freshman libero Cierra Simpson will attend the USA Volleyball tryouts Feb. 21-23 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

This tryout will serve as the selection basis for the U.S. Collegiate National Teams (formerly the Women’s Senior A2 Teams), the U.S. Women’s Junior National Team and potential athletes to train with the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team this summer.

The U.S. Collegiate National Teams program has two different options if selected. USA Volleyball will have one U.S. Collegiate National Team of 12 athletes and two coaches travel to China June 13-27, 2014, for a series of training sessions and matches in conjunction with a separate team representing the Pac-12 Conference.

The second option for the selected U.S. Collegiate National Team is training and participation at the 2014 USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships (GJNC) held in Minneapolis. A projected 36 athletes will be invited to participate in the program with training beginning on June 22, 2014, followed by the competition portion June 26-30. U.S. Collegiate National Teams will compete against each other while serving as inspiration for junior athletes competing in the GJNC on what the next level of competition is like in college.

The tryouts are free and open to the public; however seating is very limited in Sports Center II. There will be a live stream this year (http://www.teamusa.org/USA-Volleyball/USA-Teams/Volleyball/Women/2014-National-Team-Tryouts), starting on Friday at 2 p.m.

Taylor Simpson is no stranger to USA Volleyball. She was named to the U.S. Women’s Senior A2 Team last year and also earned a spot on the USA Beach Volleyball A2 Team. Simpson was also involved with USA Volleyball in high school. She earned a spot on the 2010 U.S. Youth Olympic Team that finished second in Singapore at the Inaugural Youth Olympics. Simpson led the team at the tournament and recorded 11 kills, six blocks and an ace in the final match of the tournament. She was also a member of the USA Youth National Training Team.

Both Taylor and Cierra played a significant role in returning the Buffs to the NCAA Tournament this past season for the first time since 2006. Taylor led the Buffs with 3.61 kills per set, which ranked eighth in the Pac-12 and Cierra led CU with 3.21 digs per set. The Buffs advanced to the second round of the tournament before falling in the fifth set to No. 10 Minnesota on the Gophers’ home court. CU recorded an 18-14 overall record and finished the Pac-12 season with a 9-11 record.

Selected athletes will be notified by early March and USA Volleyball will announce the selections by the end of March once all roster spots are accepted and confirmed.
