The National Park Service says it won't issue a permit to hold a stage of the 2013 USA Pro Cycling Challenge in Colorado National Monument.

Race organizers haven't chosen locations for 2013 yet, but a group of Grand Junction boosters has been trying to bring the Colorado race to town. The Park Service rejected the Grand Junction Local Organizing Committee's request to host part of the 2012 race through the national monument.

On Tuesday, Colorado National Monument Superintendent Lisa Eckert and Park Service Intermountain Region Director John Wessels rejected the request for a potential 2013 event. They say routing the race through the monument would conflict with park management policies and a law barring activities that would impair park resources or interfere with enjoyment of the park by future generations.
